What is the origin of the horizontal top bar in Indian language scripts such as Devanagari and Bengali?
The bar was already there in Sanskrit; many people think that it representes the line of the page and that the writing in thos languages was under the line.
Gurjerati has no "top bar" but other than that most of the letters closely resemble the Hindi (Devenagari) ones.

My blue task bar moved itself from horizontal at the bottom of my screen to vertical on right side of screen.?
What happened ? How do I move the task bar back to the bottom of my screen ? Being vertical on the right side it has shrunk my pages. The computer did this all by itself.|||Assuming you're using Windows, left-click and hold on a blank part of the taskbar and just drag it to the bottom of the screen - probably have to drag diagonally to the bottom. Once it's back, right-click on a blank part of the taskbar and click "Lock the Taskbar" - this should stop it moving again.|||Same thing happened to me! I spent almost an hour trying to put it back! Yes you use tie wire it is light weight and all you do is insert the vertical and lift the horizontal bar to the height you require and then wrap with wire and twist to secure. I can't scroll to the right or the left in safari any more because the horizontal scrolling bar went missing! this makes it impossible to sign into website where the sign in button is off to the right! Make the browser page bigger by going to the bottom right hand corner and click and drag until it gets as wide as it can.

Why do boy's bikes have the horizontal bar, but girl's bikes do not?
I racked my tailbone and other parts years ago when hopping down on a boy's bike...I assume that this is every bit as unpleasant, if not more for guys--why have that bar at all?! :-)|||The reason it's there is because it makes for a stiffer and stronger frame than a bar that's a lot more lower in the bike.
Most mid to high end bikes for women have the bar in the same place. Where the real difference between a mans and womens bike is color (just kidding, sort of). The geometry could be different, but even then, the WSD geometry (women specific design) might fit better some short men, while for some women above 5'6" a mens bike might fit better.|||i guess it's because of the structure between males and females|||Today, the basic design of women's and men's bicycles is the same. The difference is in the lengths of the tubes to account for the structural difference between men and women such as the proportional difference between the legs and the torso. The top tube -- the horizontal bar referenced in your question -- is similar in both designs. A properly sized bike has enough clearance below the crotch to enable the rider to safely hop off the bike. Either the bike you were riding was too big for you or you hopped off with significant knee bend. Either of those would cause the painful landing you've described.

On the bottom of my monitor there is a black sometimes pixelized bar that runs horizontal how to I fix this?
It's only about an inch wide but runs all the way across horizontally. It changes color sometimes and the connections are good. When I shut my computer down the monitor stays on for a moment and then goes off but for the moment while its on the bar is still there. This is a new Gateway computer with Vista and a HP vp15 monitor. Whats the deal!|||Sounds like a monitor or video adapter problem.
If you have another monitor, try connecting that and see if the problem goes away. If it does, the first monitor is failing; if it doesn't, the video adapter is failing.
If you don't have another monitor, try checking that all cables are connected securely. If the problem persists, it's a problem with the monitor hardware or the video adapter hardware.
If this is a LCD monitor, make sure that the screen resolution you've set in Windows matches the native resolution of the monitor.
If the connections between PC and monitor allow for both digital and analog, try switching between them to see if the problem goes away.
If you have another monitor, try connecting that and see if the problem goes away. If it does, the first monitor is failing; if it doesn't, the video adapter is failing.

Toshiba CRT TV problem (one horizontal bar in the picture)?
I have a Toshiba CRT TV, I'm not sure of how big it is, definitely a lot more than 40". The picture usually works, but now occasionally when I turn it on, the sound works fine, but the picture is black except for one bright horizontal bar in the center. How can this be fixed?|||Well if it's a CRT that's bigger than 40", then it has to be a projection TV.

If it says 800x600 change it to 1024x768 which is more the norm these days. Just move the slider bar to the right.

Why does the Devanagari script and Bengali script has horizontal bar on top?What's it used for?
The horizontal bar on top of Bangla (Bengali) script is called "matra" and we have been using it without ever questioning anyone since I thought this matra is used to keep the letters under one straight line, not to veer away from the same horizontal axis.
To me the matra is used for keeping my handwriting as horizontally straight and also to connect the letters to form a distinct word. I know this may not be the reason why matra is there in the first place, but to me it appears the only explanation.

right click anywhere on the bar ( not the icons) and choose to unlock it.

Is there any way that I could move my task bar from horizontal to vertical?
Please don't say to unlock the bar and move it..it doesn't work that way. I have an xp. I really need to change it cause that half of my screen is broken and I can't afford a new computer right now and I need it for school.|||It does work. Done it this way too many times already. I printed a postage on paypal but it came out with little horizontal white lines through bar code, is it ok?

How can I make a Dreamweaver spry horizontal menu bar sit central on the page?

Idownloaded windows vista &now my screen flips with a horizontal black bar (over & over again) How do I fix?
I upgraded from windows xp. I was able to set my refresh rate at 75hertz from 60 hertz (because 60herts caused the flipping). However, with the new windows vista, I cannot seem to set to 75 hertz like I could before I downloaded vista. ANY IDEAS?|||Did you run the vista compatibility wizard before installing it? A lot of hardware is incompatible with vista and could be a problem with your video card drivers. I suggest you roll back to windows xp and save yourself the endless headaches of vista.

In order to fit the menu items in horizontally some of the link text has had to wrap over 2 lines within one button. The only way I know of centring the text in each button is to set line height to the same height as the button but because some text has wrapped within and effectively takes up 2 lines this technique doesn't work. My third brake light (the horizontal bar) on a 1996 Ford Taurus wagon does not work?
I checked the bulbs, they are good. The other 2 brake lights do work. There is no voltage at the wires leading to the brake light. I do not have the original owner's manual, so please be specific when giving me hints. The first thing I would like to do is to check the fuse for this light, but I do not know the abbreviation for it.
Any other hints are welcome.|||it's not a bad fuse, there is only one fuse the powers all the brake lights.
check for a broken wire in the lift gate area, inside the rubber boot at the hinge point. the wire may have been worn out or stretched and broke. if you don't see a broken wire around there, follow the wiring inside the vehicle|||Just start pulling fuses out one at a time till you find the burnt one. Putting them back right away of course.
I'm sure you can find a fuse box diagram online.|||have you checked the wires running through the light to the fuse? maybe its old or ripped u should check|||You could have an 'earthing problem'!|||It's not a fuse if the other two lights work. Replace the bulb even if it looks fine. If it still doesn't work, check the wiring. Run a jumper wire from the ground side of the bulb to some metal on the car body, while someone presses the brake pedal. If your bulb lights up, you need a new ground wire. If not check the hot wire going down to one of the other brake lights. Also make sure the metal terminals inside the bulb socket are clean and making good contact with the base of the bulb.|||hey there its not a fuse or a bad ground your tail lights and brake lights run off the same ground it is your bulb go to a parts store get a new bulb and replace it this should fix your problem but make sure you put a little white grease in side your bulb socket this will keep dampness out and keep it a clean good connection hope this is help full to you but if your going to be pulling fuses get a fuse kit it comes with replacement fuses and a fuse tester because sometimes a fuse is blow'en and you can not see it a fuse tester will let you know forsure if your fuse is good or not

I have a Dell Latitude E6400. I have volume control buttons above the F10 - F12 keys on my laptop keyboard. When I used to click on these buttons, a blue sound level bar would appear in the lower right corner of my laptop monitor, now it doesn't. How do I get it to reappear? When I'm typing an email message why do I have to contend with an active horizontal scroll bar which I must move, left and right, to review what I'm writing? I have a friend who uses Yahoo email and he does not have a moving scroll bar.|||Usually the reason for the scroll bar is because the viewable screen window is too narrow to view the entire area. You need to use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+D or click the star with the green cross (use Ctrl+i to list favorites and the star) to Add to Favorites (vertical bar). BTW, the favorites in the Favorites Bar are stored in a folder called Favorites Bar. You can open the folder and drag those favorites to your regular favorites. I suggest you don't delete the folder. The best thing to do is use a combination of two technologies: HTML and CSS. These two languages work together on almost every web site you use. The HTML tells the browser what objects to display, and the CSS describes the look and feel of those objects! Pretty cool...
So what we need is a HTML "Unordered List" of links for your navigation bar, which can look like this:

That "id" in the unordered list element will be used to look up in the CSS to see how to draw this particular list!
Now in your CSS area or separate page you can put the following:

}
#horizontal_nav li {
display: inline
}

Does anyone else use a horizontal bar instead of an umlaut in German?
I'm in an intermediate German language class at the moment in college. I saw a friend use a horizontal bar, instead of the two dots and immediately began using that. I'm an engineer, so in my math and engineering classes, sometimes a double derivative is a double dotted something, or a line as well, which is confusing. Anyways, is this conventional? Will people understand what I mean if I were to use a bar instead of the umlaut? thanks!|||It depends who was to read it ;-)
