On the cross in religeon, what is the horizontal bar (the one that goes sideways) called. I'm sure it has a name but no idea what it is called and would love it if someone could help. I'm in the middle of doing coursework for english and this word is vital for my essay.|||The Cross Bar or Bar of Humanity, since it goes horizontally like Jesus' arms stretched out to embrace mankind.
The vertical bar is the Bar of God, upon which Christ rose from earth (feet) to heaven (head).
Thus the two bars which make up the Cross comprise a complete reconciliation of Earth/Mankind and Heaven/God.
